Voter Participation

  In September of 2000, Tidewater NOW entered into a coalition with other local groups including the Urban League of Hampton Roads, the NAACP Voter Fund, 200+ Men, Concerned Citizens for Political Education of Norfolk, Blacks in Government, Asian Indian of Hampton Roads and others to form the Hampton Roads United Coalition for Voter Participation.  This group, in its most fledgling form, managed to register 1,700 voters in one month and then mobilized educational canvassing and Election Day efforts to motivate, educate and transport voters.  The groups non-partisan effort was one of the largest ever seen in the Tidewater Area.  Tidewater NOW is extremely proud of its work with the Hampton Roads United Coalition for Voter Participation and thanks all of the members that walked, called, drove, cooked, delivered and registered over the two month effort to "Get Out the Vote" for the 2000 election.

Election 2000 was not the end for the Hampton Roads United Coalition for Voter Participation or for Tidewater NOW's efforts to register, educate and motivate Tidewater's voters and would-be voters.  Please join us in continuing the efforts on a daily basis.  Tidewater NOW challenges all of its members:
1) To register a voter EACH MONTH for the next year;
2) To educate those around you of the issues and why each vote is important to perpetuate our democracy and insure our input;
3) To volunteer for future voter participation events; and
4) To participate in the daily process of government to let your elected officials know whether you are satisfied with the job they are doing for you, your family, and your friends.

For your convenience we have provided other web links that will assist in registration, education and participation.  Registration materials are available at regular general membership meetings, but you can also find them at your local library and Division of Motor Vehicles. Please let us know if you have questions by contacting us at now4equality@hotmail.com
